Nakhichevan is the city, which is situated on the Lower Don and was founded in 1779 by Armenians, who moved from Crimea by order of Catherine II. The history of its development is closely connected with the policy of the Russian Empire on development of southern lands and their integration into the socioeconomic and cultural part of the country. In the basis of spatial realization of this policy were the ideas of the city and principles of classicism.
Nakhichevan is the first city on the Lower Don, which was founded as a trade and handicraft settlement, but not as a fortress. Unlike similar cities, which were formed spontaneously, it was originally built according to the plan corresponding to the architectural ideas of the last quarter of the 18th century. The author of the first plan of the city of 1781 is unknown. Neither anyone knows the author of two religious buildings, which were architectural dominants of the city: the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator and the Church of the Armenian monastery Surb-Khach, which is located outside the city. Probably, this was I.E. Starov. Such projects of the Russian architect as planning of the cities Voronezh, Nikolaev, Ekaterinoslav, the Church of the estate in Nikolsky-Gagarin and many others as well as his long work in the Novorossiysk region proves that he might be the architect of Nakhichevan. I.E. Starov’s projects predefined the architectural appearance of the pre-revolutionary Nakhichevan, characterized by the principles of regularity and style of classicism. The Central square where with the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator, which was built in the style of Russian classicism, united all the streets which were intersecting at right angles. The Church determined the style of the most important city buildings: magistrate, theatre, parish churches, etc. Outside the city there was The Church of the Armenian monastery Surb-Khach which also became a fine embodiment of classicism. The culture of constructing of Nakhichevan is based on classicism which set the tone for the architectural appearance of the city and the was appreciated by the citizens so much that even the facades of the period of eclecticism gravitated towards classical forms.
