Abstract

The article focuses on the Soviet portrait painting of the 1960–1970s, marked by the influence of Renaissance art. The cultural heritage of the past centuries was perceived by artists as an alternative space to the official Soviet ideology. However, analyzing the works of art, artists’ statements, and critics’ comments, the author comes to the conclusion that though Soviet portraitists borrowed the imagery and some techniques of Renaissance art, they continued to use the basic methods of socialist realism such as the uncritical interpretation of history and the idealization of contemporary realities and contemporary men. The article specially focuses on the papers of well-known art historian Michael Alpatov who, according to the author’s opinion, described the image of the Renaissance adopted by the Soviet intelligentsia of the 1960–1970s.
