The purpose of the paper is to review the major works in German devoted to Gesamtkunstwerk phenomenon which have been issued starting from the period of Romanticism till the present days. The notion of Gesamtkunstwerk is of unique German origin and cannot be literally translated into other languages what signifi cantly influences researches of this phenomenon. That is why the article concentrates specifically on studies in German by such prominent researchers of Gesamtkunstwerk as R. Wagner, F. Nietzsche, H. Sedlmayr, B. Grois along with the modern authors whose works appeared during of the first decade of the 21st century.
