Abstract |
Search for spiritual and aesthetic marks is very indicative of contemporary icon painting, but it is dual in itself. On the one hand, it is directed to the Early Christian sacred treasures, on the other it is inflated by modernist aspirations and disallowance of canon and liturgical nature of sacred images. Contemporary icon possesses some special qualities: it is more a work of art appreciated from the aesthetical point of view than a sacred object. Modern icon-painters can choose any style. This is largely caused by the absence of a major system of artistic expression which could influence the development of icon-painting. |
