Abstract

The article analyzes the methodology of studying French decorated book bindings of 1798–1815 from the standpoint of art history. In contrast to existing studies considering the bindings of this period in the context of the history of private collections or craft technology, the author proposes for the first time their stylistic analysis. The article identifies the elements of bindings that are most significant for the stylistic analysis of ornamentation, investigates its typical features, determines whether this body of monuments belongs to the Empire style, and formulates the features of its interpretation on bindings. The results of the study form the basis for further analysis of the design of decorated book bindings and their comparison with the ornamentation of other objects of French works of applied art in the Empire style.
