Abstract

The article sheds light on a less known contact between two scholars: professor Ivan V. Tsvetaev and archaeologist Giovanni Battista de Rossi. The study of the letters stored in the Apostolic Library of the Vatican and in the archive of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts allows us to reconstruct the reason for their connection. With de Rossi's permission, Ivan Tsvetaev commissioned the artist Fyodor Reiman to make copies of frescoes of the Roman catacombs. Copies were supposed to be shown at the Moscow Museum of Fine Arts, and now they are kept at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. For this cooperation and constant assistance to Russian scientists, de Rossi was awarded the Order of St. Anna of the first degree.
