Abstract |
The Marquis Giuseppe Rondinini (1725–1801) felt the need to spread the knowledge of his collection through printing. On December 10th, 1758, he paid two engravings and the expenses for the printing of a short book containing the learned antiquarian comment of Ridolfino Venuti. His interest for the graphic reproduction of the sculptures of the collection, especially of the bas-reliefs, increased from 1770. In 1771 the Marquis met Francesco Pozzi, the nephew and pupil of the engraver Rocco, who was assigned the job of incising in copperplates 100 drawings (numero cento Disegni in Statue, Busti e bassi Rilievi). The conditions for this enterprise were fixed in a private contract, agreed on October 1st, 1771, and undersigned by the both parties. The work was not fulfilled because of some misunderstandings between these two men. The witnesses produced by the Marquis are known through the processual acts of the legal action charged on the young artist in 1775. Probably at the moment of the contract, Pozzi did not realize how the contractual clauses were vexatious... Francesco Pozzi had not completed the job and the Marquis had the right to appoint another engraver forthe correction of the incised copperplates. Many payments were made until 1793. This publication never happened, despite the noteworthy display of energy and economic means on the part of the Marquis. It’s possible that economic and family’s concerns, in particular the health problems of his young wife, who died in 1797, convinced the Marquis not to fulfil the projected publication. |
