Ph. D.in art history, researcher. Specialist in Medieval Russian art.

Born in Voronezh. His interest in Byzantine and Medieval Russian art goes back to his early years. In 1996 he entered the Department of Art History, Lomonosov State university. He wrote his thesis on donors’ portraits of Medieval Russia of the 11–13thcenturies under the supervision of E. Smirnova. In 2004 he completed his PhD “Donors’ portraits in Medieval Rus in the 11–15thcenturies: influence on Russian iconography”. After that he worked at the Department of Expertise of Medieval Russian art at the “Gelos” auction house. From 2004 he has been affiliated to the Department of Russian Art, Lomonosov State university.

Also he is in charge of practical summer seminars in Novgorod and Pskov.

Alexander Preobrazhensky is also affiliated to the Departments of Medieval Russian Art at State Institute of Art Studies and at Institute of Theory and History of Art Academy of Fine Arts. He works in cooperation with the “Orthodox encyclopaedia” centre (he wrote a number of articles on the iconography of the miracle working Mother of God icons) and also with the “Northern pilgrim” publishing house as an editor.

He published more than 50 papers, took part in various conferences, including international ones. He is an active participant of the Lazarev and Fyodorov-Davydov conferences that are organised by the department of history of Russian art, Lomonosov State university.
