Abstract

The article aims to explore the specific role of Classical tradition in art and culture of the Italian Renaissance. To a large extent perception of Classical antiquity determined the identity of the Renaissance centers. Thus, in the 15thcentury Ferrara cultivation of Classical culture based on local courtly traditions pursued a specific goal to consolidate the dynastic and personal prestige of the Este rulers. The author of the paper analyses the perception of images originating from Antiquity and their programmatic role in the development of the ideology of power in Ferrara during the reign of Leonello, Borso and Ercole I d’Este. Study of a wide range of monuments (paintings, sculptures, medals and illuminations) gives us the opportunity to trace the development of dynastic iconography. Particular attention is paid to communication of the fine arts and literature, which formed the basis of courtly “mythology” of the Este family.
