Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art

Alexander Bykhovskii is an artist, sculptor, architect, teacher and poet. The artist is typical figure of Russian avant-garde art that at the same time retained vivid ties with art tradition (iconpainting, Jewish folk art). The artist’s heritage includes the paintings (among other museums and galleries, saved in the State Tretyakov gallery and The Pushkin State museum of fine art) and also big and precious archive (saved in the archive of the State Tretyakov gallery). The papers of this archive consist of publicistic articles, philosophical notes and fiction works (poetry, allegoric fairy tales etc) that help to have a good grasp of Alexander Bykhovskii’s art (and sometimes are like comments to his art) and also are precious on its own.
In Alexander Bykhovskii’s works he often thinks over different questions of art. He examines some strictly-professional problems (perspective, figurative space etc) and also some broad categories: apprehension of realism and individual artist’s style; problem of continuity of art tradition and actuality of art in changing world. The artist originally interprets monumental and decadent categories and reflects a lot on sources of art and its destination. There is also original artist’s attitude to Antiquity and the oriental culture, to decadence and realism in a lot of Bykhovskii’s works. In my conference report I would like to emphasize main problems of esthetics that Alexander Bykhovsky was interested in and to explore artist’s attitude to it (the ground for this are the documents of artist’s archive); at the same time the copies of Alexander Bykhovskii’s paintings and canvas (where his original philosophy took shape) will be shown.
The most of artist’s manuscripts have never been published.
