Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art

The type of centric temples with three axes of symmetry is a relatively rare and very unusual phenomenon in the history of architecture. Structures with a triangular or triaxial plan existed in Europe already in the Middle Ages, but they got extremely widespread in times of Baroque. Italian architects F.Borromini and G.Guarini developed in their works the type of triangular & triaxial centric temples and chapels. In most cases, these were the churches, often (but not always) dedicated to the Holy Trinity, what was symbolically reflected in the shape of a triangle. Many of such churches were built in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic (former Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation) in the turn of the 17th – 18th centuries. Architects G. Dientzenhofer, J. B.Fischer von Erlach, & J.Santini-Aichel often used triangular shape in their projects. German architect-theorist L.-C.Sturm has created several projects of triangular churches. In the Age of Enlightenment in France secular buildings with a triangular plan began to appear. In the popular book of J. F.Nuefforge a project of «the Temple of War» was published (1765). The triangular form was also used by J. L.Legeay & K. N.Ledoux. In England during the time of Elizabeth I appeared unusual triangular structures. The project of Longford Castle (built in the 16th century) was published in the famous book «Vitruvius Britanicus». In the 18th century triangular park pavilions called «Follies» became extremely popular in England (famous «Gothic Temple» by J.Gibbs).
In Russia, first designs of the churches with a triangular plan appeared in the 1st half of the 18th century. Italian architects G. Chiaveri (1722 design of the church in Korostyn) & F.B. Rastrelli (c.1750, unknown church) experimented with a triangular shape. However, a triangular shape was for the first time implemented in the «Sliding Hill Pavilion» (1762-74, A.Rinaldi). Triangular «Chesmenskiy Palace» near St. Petersburg (1774-77, G.Felten) was based on the project of English Longford Castle. At the same time in Moscow the first triangular churches, unusual for the Orthodox tradition, appeared. The Church of Our Lady of Vladimir in the estate Vinogradovo (1772-77) & the Church of St.George in-the-Fields [«na vspol’e»] (1779-88, has not survived) on the Malaia-Nikitskaya street are usually associated with V.I. Bazhenov. Neufforge’s project of «The Temple of War» was a prototype for the both buildings. Bazhenov had ordered Neufforge’s book from France in 1771. Other prototypes could be the projects of triangular churches by Sturm, whose books were in the library of D.V. Ukhtomskiy (Bazhenov’s teacher). After that time the typology of triaxial centric churches developed in two directions.
1) The first line directly developed the centric type of triangular buildings, sometimes with emphasizing the corner rotundas. In the Russian province, there are a number of churches which copied the Church in Vinogradovo & the Church of St.George in-the-Fields: Ivankovo (1802), & Kintanovo (1807-11) Yaroslavl region, in Valuevo (1803-08), Svin’ino (1823), & Shushkodom (1802, has not survived) Kostroma region; & others. The churches in Bobrovka (1802, has not survived.) Tver region, & Novo-Tavolzhanka (1815, has not survived.) Kursk region, belong to the same group. The church in Voronovka (1817) of the Ulyanovsk region has an unusually complex composition. And the church in Koptevka (1835) of the Ulyanovsk region, on the contrary, is a simplified version of a triaxial rotunda.
2) The second line went along the way of combining the centric core of four rotundas (three angled around a larger one in the center) and longitudinally oriented refectory [«trapeznaya»] with a bell tower. The main building of this group is The Church of Stt. Cosmas & Damian on Maroseyka street (1790-1803), built by M.F. Kazakov. This Moscow church was very popular, thanks to its pleasing architectural form, as well as the miraculous icon (which was inside the church), and it spawned a large number of copies in the Russian provinces. The churches: in Kochemli (1791-98) Tver region, in Protas’ev Ugol (1792-95) and Neretino (1796-1811) Ryazan region, in Karacharovo (1795), and Shimanovo (1800-05), Moscow region, in Velikiy Dvor (1796-1809) Vologda region, Aleksino (1810, has not survived) Vladimir region, Baylovka (1813) Tambov region, Rtischevo (1823) of the Penza region do copy almost literally the forms of the prototype. A number of provincial churches do freely interpret the forms of the original: The Church of the Ascension in Kolomna (1792-99), Moscow region, the church in Beryozovka (1798-1810), Tula region, Kozulino (1809, has not survived) Smolensk region, Matryonino (Roschino 1804-21, architects P.I. Schetinin, F.Camporesi) Vladimir region. Thus, the unusual type of triaxial centric churches became fairly widespread in Russia at the turn of 18th - 19th centuries, thanks to copying popular iconographic models.
